Constructivism (learning theory)

The learning paradigm holding that people learn by actively constructing their own knowledge through interaction with the environment, rather than passively absorbing instruction. Developed by developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, who studied how children construct knowledge through environmental interaction (La construction du reel chez l’enfant, 1937).

Core claim

Per The Gamer’s Brain (book) (Chapter 8): according to constructivist theory, the environment acts as a facilitator (or obstruction) rather than a direct teacher — the learner explores, discovers, and experiments, guided by immediate feedback on successes and failures. Hodent ties this to the depth-of-processing literature (Craik and Lockhart, 1972): the more actively knowledge is constructed, the deeper the level of processing, and the better the resulting retention. Constructivism sits alongside — not replacing — the behavioral and cognitive paradigms of learning that Hodent covers earlier in the same chapter; each captures a different facet of how learning works.

Papert’s constructionism

Mathematician and educator Seymour Papert, a student of Piaget’s, extended constructivism into constructionism: the idea that learning is most effective when a learner experiments with material in a concrete, meaningful situation — building something. Working from the 1960s onward, Papert used the Logo programming language (with its “turtle graphics”) to let children learn geometry by teaching a virtual turtle to draw shapes, discovering the properties of a square (four equal sides, four right angles) through their own mistakes and successes rather than being told. Hodent quotes Papert directly: “The knowledge is acquired for a recognizable personal purpose” because “the child does something with it” (Papert, Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas, 1980, p. 21).

Why it matters for games

Hodent’s central takeaway, stated as the single most important thing to remember about learning in games: the most efficient way to teach an interactive mechanic is to let players learn it by doing, in context, with a purpose — not to freeze gameplay and display instructional text. She illustrates the contrast with Far Cry’s parody-tutorial Blood Dragon, which deliberately mocks bad tutorial practice by pausing gameplay for walls of text, versus Fortnite’s approach of teaching the “build stairs” mechanic by placing the player in an underground cave they’re motivated to escape, with a visible chest at ground level pulling their attention and anticipation.
