Somatic markers hypothesis

The theory that emotions — experienced as bodily sensations (“gut feelings”) — play a functional role in decision-making by forcing attention onto the likely negative or positive outcome of a choice, before any conscious reasoning takes place. Developed by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio in Descartes’ Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain (1994).

Mechanism

Per The Gamer’s Brain (book) (Chapter 7): “somatic markers” are the knots-in-your-stomach or weight-off-your-shoulders sensations that steer you away from options with likely negative outcomes and toward ones with likely positive outcomes — before you’ve consciously worked out why. Damasio’s own framing, as Hodent presents it: “gut feelings” and “intuition” originate from these markers, so the quality of someone’s intuition depends on the quality of the emotion-outcome associations they’ve built up from past experience — which is also why experienced professionals’ intuitions in their domain tend to outperform novices’ in the same situation.

The hypothesis is supported by clinical evidence Hodent cites: patients with damage to the prefrontal cortex (specifically bilateral lesions of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex) lose access to these somatic markers. They retain intact reasoning ability but become insensitive to future consequences, take more risks, and struggle with value-based decisions and moral judgment — for instance, being unable to appreciate that a short-term gain (like a new client) isn’t worth a longer-term cost (like a damaged friendship).

Why it matters

Hodent’s larger point, against a common assumption: emotions do not necessarily prevent rational decision-making — in many cases they enable it. Humans don’t run exhaustive cost-benefit calculations for most choices (her example: deciding between Italian and Japanese food for lunch); instead, somatic markers let people shortcut to a decision using accumulated emotional learning, particularly useful given the brain’s limited attention and working memory. This directly informs Hodent’s broader treatment of emotion as an integral part of game design and engage-ability, rather than something separate from or opposed to “rational” usability.
