Yu-kai Chou

Gamification author and consultant, referenced in I Studied 500+ Gamified Apps (video) as the “gamification OG.” Quoted on the central failure mode of consumer gamification design:

PBL is the scoreboard of a game, not the game itself. You wouldn’t walk into a baseball stadium, look at the scoreboard, and feel motivated to play baseball, right?

This is the single most-cited argument against the PBL fallacy — that points, badges, and leaderboards display the state of play but do not constitute the play itself.

Stub entity — promoted because the quote is load-bearing for the PBL fallacy page and is directly attributable. Tim’s video doesn’t go deeper into Chou’s framework, but Chou is publicly known for the Octalysis framework (eight core drives of gamification), which is the conceptual context the quote sits in. The framework isn’t covered in this source; promote if reinforced by a second source.
