Flow (psychology)

The state of complete absorption in an activity, in which self-consciousness fades and the sense of time distorts. Identified and named by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (1990), who defined it as the experience of a “person’s body or mind… stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile” (Csikszentmihalyi 1990, p. 3).

Conditions for flow

Per The Gamer’s Brain (book) (Chapter 6), reaching flow requires:

  • A task that is genuinely challenging relative to skill — not too easy, not too hard
  • Clear goals
  • Unambiguous, immediate feedback on progress toward those goals
  • The ability to fully concentrate, free of distractors
  • A sense of control over one’s own actions
  • A task that is meaningful to the person doing it

Flow doesn’t happen by chance — Hodent stresses it has to be worked for, and the experience leading up to it isn’t necessarily pleasant (her example: the painful, finger-aching process of learning guitar before the moment of real progress). Once in flow, attention narrows so completely that people can lose track of time, hunger, or even a person talking to them nearby — she connects this directly to inattentional blindness.

GameFlow: the game-specific model

Hodent builds from Csikszentmihalyi’s general theory to GameFlow, a model developed specifically for evaluating player enjoyment by Sweetser and Wyeth (2005, “GameFlow: A Model for Evaluating Player Enjoyment in Games,” ACM Computers in Entertainment). GameFlow adapts Csikszentmihalyi’s flow conditions directly to game design — translating “clear goals,” “immediate feedback,” and “challenge-skill balance” into concrete criteria a game can be evaluated against.

In Hodent’s own Game engage-ability framework (see Game engage-ability), Game Flow is the third of the Three Pillars, alongside Motivation and Emotion. She treats the difficulty curve — keeping challenge matched to a player’s growing skill over the course of a game — as the central practical lever for sustaining flow.
