Selective attention
Focused attention: the mode in which the mind acts like a spotlight, processing one selected element of the environment fully while leaving the rest comparatively “in the dark.” Contrasted with divided attention (multitasking), where focus is split across two or more elements at once and processing quality suffers on both.
The cocktail party effect
Per The Gamer’s Brain (book) (Chapter 5), the classic demonstration of focused attention is the cocktail party effect (Cherry, “Some Experiments on the Recognition of Speech, with One and Two Ears,” 1953, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America): in the middle of a loud party, you can lock onto and follow one conversation while every other conversation gets filtered out — until, notably, someone nearby says your name, at which point passive (bottom-up) attention can pull your focus away.
Inattentional blindness — the invisible gorilla
A direct side effect of selective attention: because focusing on one thing means filtering out the rest, unattended events can go completely unnoticed even when they are large, unexpected, and directly in view. The canonical demonstration is Simons and Chabris, “Gorillas in Our Midst: Sustained Inattentional Blindness for Dynamic Events” (1999, Perception): participants asked to count basketball passes between players in white shirts reliably fail — about half the time — to notice a person in a gorilla suit walk through the middle of the scene, stop, thump its chest, and walk off.
Hodent connects this directly to game design: it is not enough to display a visual or audio cue to inform a player about something important — if the player is deeply focused elsewhere (say, in combat), there’s a real chance the cue won’t be perceived at all, and several studies she cites show that working-memory load makes inattentional blindness worse, not better. The responsibility, in her framing, sits with the designer: you cannot blame players for missing information you technically displayed if their attention was legitimately consumed elsewhere — you have to actively direct their focus, the way a magician directs an audience’s attention to misdirect it.
