Full title: The Gamer’s Brain: How Neuroscience and UX Can Impact Video Game Design, by Celia Hodent (CRC Press / Taylor & Francis, 2017). Hodent holds a PhD in psychology and has led UX for Ubisoft, LucasArts, and Epic Games — where she built the UX practice behind Fortnite. The book is her attempt to fuse cognitive-science fundamentals with a practitioner’s Game UX methodology, aimed squarely at working game developers rather than academics.

This is the wiki’s largest single ingest to date and its first sustained treatment of cognitive/perceptual/developmental psychology (memory, attention, emotion, learning theory) as opposed to the persuasion-and-monetization-psychology cluster the rest of the wiki has built up around mobile-app and paywall craft. It also introduces UX-as-a-discipline in its own right, distinct from the growth/marketing framing of the existing onboarding and paywall sources.

The book has 17 chapters in two parts, bookended by a standalone introduction (Chapter 1, Hodent’s case for why game developers should care about UX at all).

Part I, “The Player’s Brain” (Chapters 2–9), is a condensed cognitive-science primer: how the brain forms mental models and heuristics, then chapter by chapter through perception, memory, attention, motivation, emotion, and learning — each chapter ending with concrete video-game applications.

Part II, “Game User Experience” (Chapters 10–17), is Hodent’s own applied framework. Her central move is defining Game UX = Usability + “Engage-ability” (her coined term) — usability meaning ease of use, engage-ability meaning the fun/immersion/motivation side that most UX writing (built for productivity software) has no vocabulary for. Usability is organized into Seven Pillars (Game usability); engage-ability into Three Pillars (Game engage-ability). The remaining chapters cover onboarding design, user research methodology, analytics, and UX strategy, closing with a critique of gamification as usually practiced.

Part I: The Player’s Brain

  • Ch. 2 — Brain overview. Debunks pop-neuroscience myths (10%-of-the-brain, learning styles), introduces System 1/System 2-style dual-process heuristics and mental models, and gives Anchoring bias a video-game example: Steam sale pricing, where a game’s own 59 list price anchors players' judgment of a 29 sale as a bargain (citing Tversky & Kahneman 1974, Kahneman 2011, and Ariely’s Predictably Irrational).

Key claims

  • Game UX is Usability + Engage-ability, and engage-ability — not usability — is the harder, more game-specific half. Most UX literature (built for productivity software) only has tools for the usability half.
  • Players’ brains are not a special case. Every cognitive limitation covered in Part I (working-memory capacity, forgetting curves, inattentional blindness, cognitive load) applies to players exactly as it does to anyone else — the book’s throughline is “design for the brain you actually have, not the one you wish you had.”
  • The curse of knowledge is the central occupational hazard of game design. Once you understand your own game, you cannot un-know it, which is why external playtesting (Ch. 14) is treated as structurally necessary rather than optional polish.
  • Extrinsic rewards can undermine the exact intrinsic motivation they’re meant to reinforce (the overjustification effect), which Hodent explicitly flags as a risk in daily-login-streak and reward-ladder design — a sharper, more skeptical framing than most consumer-gamification material offers.
  • Gamification, done as surface-level Points/Badges/Leaderboards, is largely a failure mode, not a technique — Hodent’s Ch. 17 critique is one of the more forceful anti-PBL statements in the wiki’s sources.

Understanding your target audience’s brain, that is, how it perceives, processes, and remembers information, as well as what motivates behavior, is the foundation of a user experience (UX) strategy, and it should be the foundation of your game design as well.

If you remember the “overjustification effect” mentioned in Chapter 6… imagine a game requiring you to log in every single day so that your reward increases the more consecutive days you log in. One day, you will forget or won’t be able to log in and it will break your streak… This is why it is generally risky to punish players who did not log in your game to collect their daily chest.

Gamification is often reduced to using points, badges, and leaderboards (PBLs) — but PBLs are the scoreboard of the game, not the game itself.

This is the wiki’s first source built on academic cognitive/developmental psychology rather than applied persuasion writing, and it substantially deepens several existing pages rather than merely cross-referencing them:

Open questions

  • Citation asymmetry. Part I is densely citation-backed (near one citation per paragraph); Part II is far more practitioner-voice, citing Hodent’s own Epic/Fortnite experience more often than academic sources. Treat Part II’s frameworks (Seven Pillars, Three Pillars) as Hodent’s original synthesis, not independently peer-reviewed models — though several of their sub-components (SDT, GameFlow, Nielsen’s heuristics) are.
  • Curse of knowledge has no citation in this book. Hodent uses it as a load-bearing term across Chapters 10, 11, and 14 but never attributes it to a specific paper. (The general academic root is usually traced to Camerer, Loewenstein, & Weber 1989 — not cited by Hodent, noted here only as background, not as her source.)
  • Big Five / OCEAN is presented with a caveat the book doesn’t fully resolve: Hodent states personality models are “not particularly reliable… especially for predicting behavior” in the same breath as introducing Yee’s (2016) finding that OCEAN factors correlate with gaming-motivation clusters — the epistemic status of that correlation (robust vs. suggestive) is not settled in the text.
